Celebration of Vaikom Satyagraha Centenary
The Postgraduate & Research Department of Tamil as well as the “Equal Opportunity Cell” at Trinity College for Women, Namakkal, observed vaikom satyagraha centenary celebrations on March 21, 2024, on the college campus. In this regard, Mrs. K. Barathi, Assistant Professor in Tamil, Trinity College for Women (Arts and Science), Namakkal, spoke on the topic entitled “Periyar: The Hero of Vaikom.” Periyar led the reputed SatyaGraha in 1924, where the people of oppressed communities were disallowed to enter the temple. Periyar’s role was very important in that incident. Thanthai Periyar’s additional names were Sun of Rationalism (பகுத்தறிவு பகலவன்), Father of Social Justice (சமூகநீதித் தந்தை), Father of the Dravidian Movement (திராவிட இயக்கத்தின் தந்தை), White Beard Expert (வெண்தாடி வேந்தர்), etc., she said. Many students took part in that programme. Dr. R.A. Anitha, Coordinator, Equal Opportunity Cell, Trinity College for Women, Namakkal proposed the vote of thanks.
